Note: Comprehension is more important than raw speed. Aim for 80%+ comprehension at your reading speed.
Your effective WPM is calculated as: Raw WPM × Comprehension Percentage. This gives you a more accurate measure of your true reading speed.
The words per minute formula is simple. To calculate WPM by hand, divide the number of words you read by the time it took in minutes:
WPM = Words Read ÷ Time in Minutes
If you're timing in seconds, multiply by 60 instead: WPM = (Words Read ÷ Seconds) × 60.
Worked example: say you read a 450-word article in 1 minute and 30 seconds (90 seconds). Divide 450 words by 90 seconds to get 5 words per second, then multiply by 60 for a reading speed of 300 WPM. To turn it into your true score, multiply by your comprehension: if you answered 80% of the questions correctly, your effective reading speed is 300 × 0.80 = 240 WPM.
